Where it all Began…

From the Loves truck stop in Ontario, Oregon I was gleaning DOT websites for the minimum tire chain requirements to get through the next six states on my route. As an owner operator, I didn’t want to spend too much money on marked up over-priced tire chains at the truck stop, especially when I could get them for half the price at home, but there was a winter storm coming in. After about an hour and a half of clicking through poorly designed government websites I basically said to hell with it, didn’t buy any chains and decided to attempt to stay ahead of the snow. As my luck would have it, I made it over all the mountain passes before the roads got bad enough to need chains, though dropping into Pendleton did get a little hairy. Needless to say, I was glad I was loaded and had a good set of tires on! Over the next few months, I started to wonder why somebody hadn’t created an app that made this kind of information more available to truckers, one that is essentially a handbook of regulations particular to each state.

Many states have their own regulations regarding legal dimensions, weight limits, minimum tire chain requirements and many more. When trucking OTR for yourself, these regulations can be difficult to keep up with when you are on the road running coast to coast. I remember constantly searching the web for regulations in different states to check king pin measurements, axle weights, overhang, and bridge laws just to avoid any violations that would affect my CSA score, put me out of service, or cost me money in fines, not to mention Insurance!

It can be extremely aggravating when you get inspected in one state with 3 foot of overhang and no problems, just to receive a $750 violation in another state, because you were unaware that state doesn’t allow any front overhang. So after a couple years of driving for myself and dealing with this, I decided that I might as well try to put something together to attempt to solve the problem and help out the broader trucking community. Thus was born The Road Pirate App.  And with the help of the North American truckers, maybe we can turn it into something useful!
